Daffodil bulbs

Daffodils flower from February into May. February Gold and Tête-à-Tête are early, while the large-flowered and double varieties follow in March and April. Short varieties suit pots and window boxes by the front door. Taller daffodils look good in borders and in groups under trees before they come into leaf.

Plant daffodil bulbs from October to mid-December, about 10 to 15 centimetres deep, in sun or light shade and in soil that does not stay wet. Daffodils often return for many years and can slowly spread in grass. Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow, so the bulb can build up strength for next year. The per m² calculator shows how many bulbs you need.

Daffodils combine well with tulip bulbs: together they flower from early spring into May. Daffodils are toxic to cats and dogs, including the bulb. Keep the bulbs out of their reach until you plant them.

Frequently asked questions

When should you plant daffodil bulbs?
Daffodil bulbs are planted in autumn, from October to mid-December. The earlier in that period, the more time the bulbs have to grow roots. They then flower from February to May, depending on the variety.
Do daffodils come back every year?
Yes, most daffodils flower year after year, especially in a sunny spot with soil that does not stay wet. Leave the foliage after flowering until it turns yellow. That way the bulb builds up strength for the next spring.
What is the difference between a daffodil and a narcissus?
There is no botanical difference. Narcissus is the Latin name of the genus, and daffodil is the common name, often used for the yellow trumpet types. All daffodils are narcissi, with many varieties in white, yellow and orange.
Can you plant daffodils in a pot?
Yes, short varieties such as Tête-à-Tête in particular do well in pots and containers. Use a pot with a drainage hole and plant the bulbs close together. Keep the soil slightly moist, but never wet.
