Boho plants are houseplants with a loose, natural shape, such as yucca, ponytail palm, areca palm, Kentia palm and cactus. They go well with rattan, jute and wood and like a bright spot.
Boho is about a warm, collected interior with natural materials, vintage furniture and lots of plants mixed together. So you are looking for plants with a loose, playful shape: feathery palm fronds, large tropical leaves or a quirky trunk. A clean, graphic plant is a better fit for Japandi. In this collection you can choose from:
Palms: Areca, Kentia, bamboo palm (Chamaedorea seifrizii) and the fishtail palm (Caryota mitis) with its jagged leaves. The Areca goes up to 230 cm here.
Ponytail palm (Beaucarnea): a thick base with a tuft of narrow, drooping leaves, from 110 to 130 cm.
Yucca from 140 to 190 cm, or the blue-grey Yucca rostrata.
Tropical leaves: Strelitzia nicolai, banana plant, Schefflera and the colourful 170 cm Codiaeum Petra.
A dry desert feel: the 120 cm Opuntia cactus, Euphorbia trigona and sansevieria.
Spots around the house
Put a large palm or yucca in the corner next to the sofa or behind a rattan chair, so the leaves hang over the seating area. With boho you can group plants: combine a tall plant with a medium one and a low one, each in a different pot. A ponytail palm or Polyscias of 90 to 100 cm looks good on a low chest or stool. A Kentia works in the bedroom, because it copes with less light than most palms. For more ideas, read boho interior style.
Pots and baskets
A boho plant pot is often woven: a basket of rattan, seagrass or jute, or a macramé hanger for a smaller plant. Terracotta, rough clay and pots with a handmade relief also fit. Feel free to mix materials and colours. Your plant comes in a nursery pot, and you choose the decorative pot or basket separately. Always put a saucer or inner pot in a basket, so water does not soak into the weave.
Light and water
Most boho plants like a bright spot, without harsh midday sun on the leaves. The Areca palm wants lots of light and lightly moist soil. The ponytail palm, yucca, cactus and sansevieria store water and need little. Only water them when the soil is almost completely dry. A Kentia can stand further from the window.
Delivery
In the Netherlands your plant arrives within 4 to 5 working days, upright in a sturdy plant box. Delivery in the Netherlands is free from €99. If anything is damaged in transit, send us a photo and we will send a new plant free of charge. We measure height from the bottom of the pot to the tallest leaf.
Frequently asked questions
Which plants suit a boho interior?
Plants with a loose, natural shape work best. Think of palms such as the Areca and Kentia, a ponytail palm, a yucca or a Strelitzia with large leaves. A cactus or sansevieria adds a dry, desert-like side.
Which pot suits boho plants?
Woven baskets of rattan, seagrass or jute are the best known, as is a macramé hanger for a smaller plant. Terracotta and rough clay fit too. Always put a saucer or inner pot in a basket, so water does not damage the weave.
How do you style plants in a boho way?
Group plants of different heights together and mix pots in different materials. Put a large palm next to the sofa, a medium plant on a chest or stool, and let leaves drape over furniture. Boho can be full and a little messy.
Which boho plant copes with low light?
The Kentia palm copes with less light than most palms and still looks good further from the window. A sansevieria can also stand in a less bright spot. An Areca, yucca or cactus, on the other hand, wants lots of light.
What is a bohemian interior?
A bohemian or boho interior is a warm, collected style with natural materials such as rattan, wood, jute and linen, plus vintage furniture, rugs and lots of plants. There are few fixed rules: you combine colours, patterns and things you like yourself.
Which plants work in a boho interior?
Boho thrives on variety. Combine trailing plants and climbers with full leafy plants such as the Polyscias and Yucca elephantipes, airy palms for a jungle feel and a sculptural cactus or succulent for contrast. The more layers of green, the stronger the boho feel.
How many plants do I need for a boho look?
More than for most styles. Boho is about abundance, so think of groups of three to five plants per corner, with hanging plants up high. Start with a few large plants and build up the look layer by layer.
Which pots suit a boho interior?
Woven baskets, rattan, jute, terracotta and macramé hangers are the natural choice. Mix the materials rather than choosing a matching set. That variety in texture is exactly what makes the boho style so rich.
Are hanging plants hard to look after?
Not really. Most hanging plants are actually quite easy. Keep in mind that they hang up high, so check the soil regularly and take the plant down now and then to water it evenly.
How do I combine plants with macramé and baskets?
Put full leafy plants in a woven basket on the floor and hang lighter plants in a macramé hanger above them. Working at different heights creates the layered look that is typical of boho.
