Large indoor plants in pots, such as white bird of paradise, fiddle leaf fig, Swiss cheese plant, Kentia palm and olive tree, arrive upright in a sturdy box or on a pallet. Most want a bright spot out of harsh midday sun.
Large houseplants with pot: plant and planter right in one go
Which size fits your space
The 83 plants in this collection range from 40 to 260 cm tall. We measure height from the bottom of the pot to the tallest leaf. In a living room with a ceiling of about 2.5 metres, leave some space above the plant, especially with species that keep growing. Up to one and a half metres, you will find the medium plants. Between 150 and 200 cm are the large plants. Plants of two metres and taller suit a mezzanine, a high hallway or an office. Also think about width: a Strelitzia nicolai or a Kentia palm takes up more room than a slender Dracaena.
Light decides the species
Start with the spot, not the plant. If the plant will be close to a large south or west-facing window, sun-loving species such as the Strelitzia, the olive tree and the European fan palm are a good fit. In a bright spot without harsh sun, a fiddle leaf fig, a Monstera or an Areca palm does well. For a darker corner, choose a plant that copes with less light, such as the Aspidistra, also known as the cast iron plant. Not sure? Use our plant finder.
Easy and demanding species
Not every large plant needs the same amount of attention. A Kentia palm, a Dracaena or a Beaucarnea (ponytail palm) can cope if you forget to water once. A fiddle leaf fig is more sensitive. It does not like being moved or draughts, and quickly drops a leaf when it happens. Each product page shows how much maintenance the plant needs and which position suits it. If you have pets, look out for the pet-friendly label. In this collection, 29 plants carry that label.
Nursery pot and decorative pot
Every plant is delivered in a nursery pot. You choose the decorative pot separately. The product name shows the diameter of the nursery pot, for example ø24 or ø34. Choose a decorative pot that is slightly wider, so the nursery pot slips in easily. Large plants are top-heavy. A wide, sturdy pot stops the plant from toppling over when you walk past.
Delivery of large plants
We deliver within the Netherlands in 4 to 5 working days. Even the tall plants travel upright in a sturdy plant box, so leaves and trunk stay intact. Delivery within the Netherlands is free from €99. If anything does get damaged on the way, send us a photo and we will send you a new plant free of charge.
A Kentia palm, a Dracaena or a Beaucarnea (ponytail palm) is a good choice if you are short on time. They can handle a dry spell and grow at a steady pace. Water when the top layer of soil is dry and place them in a bright spot without harsh midday sun.
Which large houseplant copes with low light?
No plant grows without light. For a dark corner, the Aspidistra (cast iron plant), the Kentia palm and the Chamaedorea are most suitable, because they tolerate less light than most houseplants. If the plant is far from a window, it grows more slowly and also needs less water.
Which houseplants have large leaves?
For large leaves, choose a Strelitzia nicolai, a Monstera, a fiddle leaf fig (Ficus lyrata) or a banana plant (Musa). The Strelitzia and the Musa have long, paddle-shaped leaves. The Monstera has broad leaves with holes and the fiddle leaf fig has stiff, violin-shaped leaves. They all want a bright spot.
How tall can a houseplant be in a living room?
That depends on your ceiling. In a living room about 2.5 metres high, a plant of around 200 to 220 cm fits well, with some room above it to keep growing. Our heights are measured from the bottom of the pot. If you put the plant on a stand, add those centimetres too.
Does the plant come with a decorative pot?
The plant comes in a nursery pot. You choose a decorative pot separately, in a size that fits the nursery pot. The nursery pot diameter is in the product name, so you can easily see which decorative pot you need. That way you decide the colour and style that suit your interior.
