Buying country-style plants, natural and attractive greenery
Which trees suit country-style living
A country-style interior is warm and calm, with oak, off-white, linen and old materials. An olive tree with grey-green leaves and a gnarled trunk fits in naturally. A lemon or orange tree with fruit adds a touch of colour. In this collection you can choose from:
A 160 cm standard olive tree in a ø24 cm pot, the smallest and easiest to place.
The Lorc olive trees of 180 cm and Cultivo of 230 cm, with an older trunk.
A wide 250 cm bush-form olive tree and the 270 cm bonsai olive in a ø80 cm pot.
A lemon tree of 150 or 200 cm and a 200 cm orange tree.
Indoors or outdoors
Olive and citrus are really outdoor trees. In a warm living room they usually get too little light, and in winter it is too warm for them there. Indoors they do best in a conservatory, garden room or kitchen with south-facing windows, in a spot right by the glass. Even better, keep them outside from spring to autumn, on the patio, by the French doors or next to the front door. A citrus tree has to come in before the frost, to a bright, cool spot.

Pots and care
A zinc bucket, a wooden planter, terracotta or a grey pot with a weathered concrete look all suit country-style living. Indoors, a smaller tree can also go in a woven willow basket. Your tree comes in a nursery pot, and you choose the decorative pot separately. Make sure there is a hole in the base, because olive and citrus do not cope well with wet feet. Water when the top layer of soil is dry. Citrus wants water a bit more often than olive in summer. More tips are in the citrus tree care guide and the olive tree care guide.

Frequently asked questions
Which plants suit a country-style interior?
Plants with a natural, slightly rugged look work best, such as an olive tree with grey-green leaves or a lemon tree with fruit. Combine them with wood, zinc, terracotta and linen. For a spot with less light, green houseplants with a calm shape are a better fit.
Can an olive tree stand indoors?
An olive tree can stand indoors if it gets a lot of light, for example in a conservatory or right by a large south-facing window. An ordinary living room is often too dark, and too warm in winter. Ideally, keep it outside from spring to autumn.
Can a lemon tree overwinter indoors?
Yes, a lemon tree actually has to overwinter indoors, because it is not hardy. Put it in a bright, cool place, such as an unheated conservatory or a cool room by the window. Water less in winter than in summer.
Which pot suits a country style?
Zinc, terracotta, a wooden planter or a grey pot with a weathered look all suit country-style living. Choose a pot with a hole in the base. The tree comes in a nursery pot, so you choose the decorative pot separately.
How is a large olive tree delivered?
We deliver large olive trees on a pallet. Smaller olive trees and the citrus trees come upright in a sturdy plant box. In the Netherlands your tree arrives within 4 to 5 working days, and delivery in the Netherlands is free from €99.
Which pots suit country-style living?
Terracotta and matt ceramic in warm earth tones are the natural choice. Wooden planters and woven baskets also work well. Keep the pots crafted and understated, so they match the wood and linen in the room.
What is the difference between country and Mediterranean style?
Both styles are warm and rustic, but country style leans on wood, linen and northern outdoor living, while Mediterranean is about terracotta, natural stone and the southern sun. Country feels snug and cosy, Mediterranean feels sunny and open.
Does an olive tree work in a country-style interior?
Yes, an olive tree suits a country-style interior well, especially in a conservatory or under a skylight. Its gnarled trunk and soft leaves match the outdoor feel and the rustic atmosphere. Give it plenty of light and water sparingly.
How do I create a country feel with plants?
Start with a few classic plants in terracotta or wooden pots and place them next to wooden furniture. Group several plants around a window and add textiles. A few deliberate choices are enough to bring in that warm, earthy atmosphere.
Are country-style plants easy to look after?
Generally, yes. The style relies on sturdy, familiar species that are not demanding. Give them a fixed spot with enough light and a regular watering routine, and they will look good for years.
