Japanese maples

The Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) is a slow-growing tree with striking foliage. Choose your variety by leaf colour. 'Bloodgood', 'Atropurpureum' and 'Trompenburg' keep dark reddish-purple leaves all summer. 'Orange Dream', 'Katsura' and 'Summergold' come out orange or yellow. 'Beni Maiko' and 'Phoenix' start the spring in red or pink. Green varieties such as 'Emerald Lace' and 'Koto-no-ito' turn gold to red in autumn.

A Japanese maple prefers partial shade, sheltered from strong wind and harsh afternoon sun. The soil can be moist but not wet. In a pot, choose a roomy container with a drainage hole and water regularly in summer. Pruning is rarely needed. Just remove dead or crossing branches, preferably in late summer.

Under a Japanese maple, low ground cover plants such as Japanese spurge or Japanese sedge keep the soil covered. You will find more trees and shrubs among all our outdoor plants.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place for a Japanese maple?
A spot in partial shade, sheltered from strong wind. Harsh afternoon sun can scorch the leaves, especially on varieties with fine or light foliage. Morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal, both in the garden and in a pot.
Can a Japanese maple grow in a pot?
Yes, many varieties stay compact and grow well in a pot for years. Choose a roomy pot with a drainage hole so excess water can drain away. Water regularly in summer and move the pot against the house wall during hard frost.
How big does a Japanese maple get?
That differs per variety. Compact varieties stay small for years and fit on a patio, others grow into a small tree in open ground after many years. The Japanese maple grows slowly, so it stays in proportion to its spot for a long time.
When should you prune a Japanese maple?
Pruning is rarely needed. If you do want to remove something, do it in late summer or winter, when the tree is dormant. In spring the tree bleeds sap when cut. Only remove dead, diseased or crossing branches.
