All about
The Alocasia dossier
Alocasia
The Alocasia grows in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, where its enormous arrow-shaped leaves catch sunlight under the canopy. It is not without reason that it is also called elephant ear.
Each variety has its own character: from the graphic zebra pattern of the Zebrina to the dark velvet of the Polly.

Placement and light
Give the Alocasia a light spot without direct afternoon sun; it burns the thin leaf. Heat and high humidity make it happy: the bathroom or a place among other plants works great.
Keep the temperature above 15 degrees and avoid drafts. Turn the plant regularly; the leaves grow strongly towards the light.
Water and feeding
Keep the potting soil constantly slightly moist; The root ball should never dry out completely, but neither should it be soaking wet. In the summer this often means a little water twice a week, in the winter less.
Spray the leaves regularly or place the plant on a saucer with pebbles and water. Feed in half doses every two weeks from April to September.
Is something wrong with your Alocasia?
Yellow leaves indicate too much water, brown edges indicate dry air. An Alocasia sometimes drops an older leaf when a new leaf appears; that's normal. Drops on the leaf tips are harmless: the plant sweats out excess moisture. Spider mites lurk in dry air.
Repot the Alocasia every one to two years in the spring; it grows quickly and its tubers fill the pot. Choose a pot that is one size larger and use airy, humus-rich potting soil. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.
Toxic to pets?
The Alocasia contains calcium oxalate and is poisonous to cats and dogs. Chewing causes immediate irritation to the mouth and throat. Place the plant out of reach of pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.
In warmth and light, an Alocasia grows surprisingly quickly: during the season, a new leaf can appear every few weeks, always larger than the previous one. In winter he takes rest; that's part of it.
Indoors, the Alocasia wentii can grow to well over a metre tall with large, arrow-shaped leaves. At XXLplant you buy it as a mature specimen of 120 cm tall in a ø32 cm pot, measured including the nursery pot. It also grows considerably wide, so give it room.
Where should you put an Alocasia wentii?
A bright spot with plenty of indirect light is ideal, such as near an east or west-facing window. Direct sun scorches the leaves. Keep it out of draughts and away from cold spots, as it grows poorly below 18 °C.
How often should you water an Alocasia wentii?
Keep the soil lightly moist, but let the top layer dry out between waterings. It is better to give a little more often than a lot in one go. Soil that is too wet is the most common cause of root rot in Alocasia.
Is the Alocasia wentii toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, the Alocasia wentii is toxic to cats and dogs, like other elephant ears. The sap contains calcium oxalate crystals that irritate the mouth and throat. Keep it out of reach of pets and young children.
Why is my Alocasia wentii losing leaves?
An Alocasia often loses an old leaf when a new one appears; that is part of how it grows. It can also drop a few leaves after a move or in winter. Lots of yellow leaves at once usually point to too much water or a spot that is too cold.
How is an Alocasia wentii delivered?
The plant leaves us upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. In frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack, and the largest plants go with a specialist carrier, otherwise PostNL or DHL. It usually arrives within 4 to 5 working days.
