The Aloe Barberae is a robust, tree-like succulent with a thick trunk and firm, fleshy leaves. This sculptural eye-catcher fits perfectly in a modern, minimalist interior. A robust plant that requires little, yet looks grand.

The tree aloe (Aloe barberae) is an aloe that grows into a tree in the wild. It has a sturdy trunk topped with rosettes of thick, grey-green, slightly curved leaves. This specimen measures 100 cm including the grow pot and stands in a pot of ø24 cm. It belongs in a sunny spot: in front of a large south-facing window, in a conservatory or outside on a warm terrace in summer. Because the leaves store water, it suits anyone with little time. Water sparingly and let the soil dry out completely in between, even less in winter. It is not hardy, so bring it indoors before the first frost. You receive it in the grow pot; a decorative pot is chosen separately.

Plant care

Location: Full sun to bright, indirect light. The plant thrives in a bright spot with at least 6 hours of light per day. Outdoors, it can be placed in full sun, while indoors, a sunny windowsill is ideal. Avoid shady spots.
Water: Requires little water, like other succulents. Water once every one to two weeks in summer, and only a small amount once a month in winter. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings and avoid wet feet.
Feeding: Very little feeding is required. You can add a little cactus or succulent food in spring, but this isn't necessary. Over-fertilizing can be harmful.
Temperature: Ideally between 15-28°C. Cannot tolerate frost; protect from temperatures below 5°C. Bring the plant indoors in winter if it is outdoors.

Extra tips:
• Use well-draining potting soil (cactus soil or with extra sand/perlite)
• Repot every few years in spring

Flowering

An older Aloe barberae can flower in winter with clusters of pink to orange tubular flowers. In a pot and indoors this rarely happens, and young plants do not flower yet. You mainly buy it for its sculptural tree shape. The plant is usually not yet in flower on delivery.

Plant height may vary by up to 10 cm. Height includes the nursery pot. The nursery pot may differ from the one in the photo.

How big does an Aloe barberae grow?

In the wild the Aloe barberae grows into a sizeable tree, but in a pot it stays much smaller. It grows slowly and over the years mainly becomes wider and fuller in the crown. XXLplant sells this tree aloe at 100 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot.

Where should you put an Aloe barberae?

An Aloe barberae wants as much light as possible, with at least six hours of light a day. Indoors a sunny spot by a south-facing window is ideal. In summer it can stand outdoors in full sun.
