The areca palm (Dypsis lutescens), also known as golden cane palm, grows as a full clump of slender stems with long, feathery fronds in fresh green. This specimen measures 160 cm including nursery pot and comes in a ø27 cm pot. As a large houseplant it fills an empty corner in the living room, and in an office or conservatory it instantly creates a tropical atmosphere.

Place it in a bright spot without harsh midday sun; partial shade is also fine, although it grows more slowly there. Keep the potting soil slightly moist without leaving water standing in the pot, and keep it out of draughts. According to the ASPCA, the areca palm is not toxic to cats and dogs. You receive it in the nursery pot, you choose a decorative pot separately.

Dypsis lutescens

The Areca palm comes from Madagascar, where it grows in groups along rivers. It owes its name gold palm to the golden yellow glow on the leaf stems.

With its full, feather-like leaves, the Areca has been one of the most popular palms for the home for generations, and is also a natural air freshener.

Placement and light

The Areca likes a lot of indirect light: close to the window but without bright afternoon sun is perfect. Too dark produces thin, weak growth.

Keep the temperature above 15 degrees, avoid cold drafts and give it space: its leaves fan out widely.

Water and feeding

Keep the root ball slightly moist during the growing season; water about twice a week in summer. In winter, the soil is allowed to dry slightly in between. The Areca is more sensitive to drying out than most palms.

Spray the leaves regularly, especially in winter, and feed every two weeks from April to September.

Is something wrong with your Areca palm?

Brown leaf tips are the classic Areca signal of dry air or too little water. Yellow leaves indicate too much water or too bright sunlight. It is normal for a bottom leaf to wither occasionally. Spider mites can strike in dry air; spraying keeps it away.

Repotting and pot choice

How big does an areca palm get?

Indoors an areca palm can exceed 2 metres after a number of years, although it grows steadily indoors. This areca palm is 160 cm tall on delivery including nursery pot, in a ø27 cm pot. Because it grows from several stems, it also keeps getting wider.

Where is the best place for an areca palm?

An areca palm prefers a bright spot, but without harsh midday sun that can scorch the leaves. A spot a few metres from an east- or west-facing window works well. Avoid draughts and the warm air directly above a radiator.

How often should you water an areca palm?

Keep the potting soil slightly moist; in summer that is often once a week, less in winter. Feel with your finger: when the top few centimetres are dry, it can have water. Never leave water standing in the pot or saucer.

Is an areca palm toxic to cats and dogs?

No. According to the ASPCA, the areca palm is not toxic to cats and dogs. So you can place it without worry in a home with pets.

Why does my areca palm get brown leaf tips?

Brown tips are usually caused by dry air, a dried-out root ball or, conversely, wet feet. After the move a single leaf may also discolour while the palm gets used to its new spot. Feel free to trim off the brown tips and water regularly.

How is an areca palm of 160 cm delivered?

The areca palm travels upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. Large plants are delivered by our own courier, and in frost or heat a heat pack or cold pack is included. If the plant arrives damaged, send us photos and we will find a solution.
