All about
The Areca palm dossier
Dypsis lutescens
The Areca palm comes from Madagascar, where it grows in groups along rivers. It owes its name gold palm to the golden yellow glow on the leaf stems.
With its full, feather-like leaves, the Areca has been one of the most popular palms for the home for generations, and is also a natural air freshener.

Placement and light
The Areca likes a lot of indirect light: close to the window but without bright afternoon sun is perfect. Too dark produces thin, weak growth.
Keep the temperature above 15 degrees, avoid cold drafts and give it space: its leaves fan out widely.
Water and feeding
Keep the root ball slightly moist during the growing season; water about twice a week in summer. In winter, the soil is allowed to dry slightly in between. The Areca is more sensitive to drying out than most palms.
Spray the leaves regularly, especially in winter, and feed every two weeks from April to September.
Is something wrong with your Areca palm?
Brown leaf tips are the classic Areca signal of dry air or too little water. Yellow leaves indicate too much water or too bright sunlight. It is normal for a bottom leaf to wither occasionally. Spider mites can strike in dry air; spraying keeps it away.
Repot the Areca every two to three years in the spring, in a pot that is one size larger. Keep the root ball as intact as possible and ensure good drainage. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.
Toxic to pets?
The Areca palm is not poisonous to cats and dogs. Even a cat that nibbles on the leaves is not at risk. Together with the Kentia, this is the animal-friendly palm for your home.
The Areca grows steadily: new stems are added every season, making the plant increasingly full. Our XXL specimens are already a full, mature oasis in themselves.
This areca palm is 70 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot, in a pot of ø17 cm. Indoors, an areca palm continues to grow over the years to well over two metres, if it gets enough light and is repotted from time to time.
Where should you place an areca palm?
In a bright spot in partial shade, out of direct sunlight. A few metres from a large window is ideal. Avoid draughts and a spot above the radiator.
How often should you water an areca palm?
Keep the potting soil slightly moist; in summer this is usually once a week, less in winter. Check with your finger first. The roots must not stand in water.
Is an areca palm toxic to cats and dogs?
No, the areca palm (Dypsis lutescens) is known to be non-toxic to cats and dogs. This makes it a good choice if you have pets.
Why does my areca palm get brown leaf tips?
Brown tips are usually caused by dry air, hard tap water or too much sun. Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from the radiator, and use rainwater or water that has stood overnight if possible.
What is the difference between an areca palm and an Areca palm?
There is no difference; it is the same plant. Areca palm is an older name; the current botanical name is Dypsis lutescens.
