Details

Tough, long-lived houseplant with broad, glossy dark green leaves. Does well in dark spots and is non-toxic to cats and dogs.

Species: Aspidistra elatior · Height: 70 cm (including nursery pot) · Pot size: ø17 cm

The cast iron plant (Aspidistra elatior) is a tough, long-lived houseplant with broad, glossy dark green leaves that emerge straight from the soil. This specimen is 70 cm tall including the grow pot and stands in a pot of ø17 cm.

It also does well in spots that get little daylight, such as a hallway, a corridor or a north-facing bedroom, making it a suitable shade plant for beginners. Direct sun, on the other hand, doesn't suit it well. Water only once the top layer is dry, as too much water is the biggest risk. It grows slowly and needs little feeding. The cast iron plant is non-toxic to cats and dogs. You receive it in the grow pot; a decorative pot is available separately.

Delivery

Shipping a two-metre plant takes more than a box and some tape. That's why we do it differently from an ordinary online shop.

How your plant arrives in one piece

Fresh from the greenhouse
Your plant does not sit in a warehouse for weeks. The grower only takes it out of the greenhouse after you order and prepares it straight away.
Packed securely
In a box made for plants. Plant and soil are secured and a protective sleeve keeps the leaves intact, so nothing shifts on the way.
Protected from heat and frost
Is it very hot or freezing outside? Then we add a cold pack or heat pack to the box, so the weather doesn't affect your plant on the way.
The right carrier for every size
Smaller plants are delivered by PostNL or DHL. The very largest plants travel upright on a pallet with a specialist carrier.
You know exactly when it arrives
As soon as your plant is on its way, you receive track & trace by email, so you can make sure someone is home and, for a large plant, someone to help carry it in.

Frequently asked questions about Aspidistra elatior

The questions we're asked most about this plant. Can't find yours? Our plant experts are happy to help.

Ask your question

How big does an Aspidistra elatior grow?

The Aspidistra elatior grows slowly and indoors usually reaches 60 to 90 cm tall, with leaves that come straight out of the soil. At XXLplant you buy it at 70 cm tall in a ø17 cm pot, measured including the nursery pot. Over the years the clump becomes fuller and wider.

Can an Aspidistra stand in a dark spot?

Yes, the Aspidistra is one of the few houseplants that does well in partial to full shade. Direct sun is actually something to avoid, as it scorches the leaves. That makes it suitable for a hallway, entrance or a corner far from the window.

Is the Aspidistra elatior toxic to cats and dogs?

No, the Aspidistra elatior is not toxic to cats and dogs. So you can put it in a home with pets without any worries.

How often should you water an Aspidistra?

Water sparingly and only when the top layer of soil is dry. For this plant too much water is a bigger problem than too little. In a cool room it needs even less.

Can an Aspidistra go in a cold room?

Yes, the Aspidistra tolerates temperatures between 10 and 24 °C and also does well in a cooler room. That is why it used to be placed in hallways and stairwells so often. As a houseplant it can't tolerate frost.

How is an Aspidistra delivered?

The plant leaves us upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. In frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack, and the largest plants go with a specialist carrier, otherwise PostNL or DHL. It usually arrives within 4 to 5 working days.
