The Alocasia dossier
Alocasia
The Alocasia grows in the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, where its enormous arrow-shaped leaves catch sunlight under the canopy. It is not without reason that it is also called elephant ear.
Each variety has its own character: from the graphic zebra pattern of the Zebrina to the dark velvet of the Polly.

Placement and light
Give the Alocasia a light spot without direct afternoon sun; it burns the thin leaf. Heat and high humidity make it happy: the bathroom or a place among other plants works great.
Keep the temperature above 15 degrees and avoid drafts. Turn the plant regularly; the leaves grow strongly towards the light.
Water and feeding
Keep the potting soil constantly slightly moist; The root ball should never dry out completely, but neither should it be soaking wet. In the summer this often means a little water twice a week, in the winter less.
Spray the leaves regularly or place the plant on a saucer with pebbles and water. Feed in half doses every two weeks from April to September.
Is something wrong with your Alocasia?
Yellow leaves indicate too much water, brown edges indicate dry air. An Alocasia sometimes drops an older leaf when a new leaf appears; that's normal. Drops on the leaf tips are harmless: the plant sweats out excess moisture. Spider mites lurk in dry air.
Repot the Alocasia every one to two years in the spring; it grows quickly and its tubers fill the pot. Choose a pot that is one size larger and use airy, humus-rich potting soil. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.
Toxic to pets?
The Alocasia contains calcium oxalate and is poisonous to cats and dogs. Chewing causes immediate irritation to the mouth and throat. Place the plant out of reach of pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.
In warmth and light, an Alocasia grows surprisingly quickly: during the season, a new leaf can appear every few weeks, always larger than the previous one. In winter he takes rest; that's part of it.
Which Alocasias are included in the Baby Alocasia Tricolour Variegata set?
The set consists of three plants: Alocasia 'Frydek Variegata', Alocasia macrorrhizos 'Aurea Variegata' and Alocasia 'Ninja Variegata'. Each plant has its own leaf shape and pattern.
How large are the baby Alocasias?
The plants are between 5 and 15 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot, and each is in an ø6 cm pot. They are young plants that you grow on yourself.
Where should you place an Alocasia?
In a bright, warm place without direct sun and without draughts. A bathroom with daylight or a spot near a humidifier helps, because Alocasia likes humid air.
How often should you water an Alocasia?
Water moderately when the top layer of soil is slightly dry. Soil that is too wet causes root rot, soil that is too dry causes drooping leaves. Water less in winter.
Why is my Alocasia losing leaves?
An Alocasia regularly replaces an old leaf with a new one. Greater leaf loss is often caused by cold, draughts, dry air or too much water. In winter, it may temporarily droop somewhat and sprout again in spring.
Is an Alocasia toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, Alocasia is toxic to cats and dogs. The plant contains calcium oxalate, which strongly irritates the mouth and stomach. Keep the plants out of reach of pets.
