This Phlebodium 'Blue Star' is 80 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot, and comes in a pot of ø26 cm. The leaves grow loosely and partly hang over the edge, so it also takes up some space in width.
Where should you place a blue fern?
In a bright spot without strong sun, or in partial shade. It does well in a bathroom with a window because of the higher humidity. A spot directly above a radiator dries out the leaf tips.
How often should you water a blue fern?
Water as soon as the top centimetre of the potting soil is dry, often once a week in summer. In winter it needs less. Do not leave water standing in the pot or saucer.
Is the blue fern toxic to cats and dogs?
No, Phlebodium aureum is listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to cats and dogs. You can therefore also place it where you have pets.
Why is my blue fern getting brown leaves?
Brown, dry leaf tips are usually caused by dry air or potting soil that has dried out too much. A single old leaf at the bottom turning brown is normal; then cut it off at the base.
Should you mist a blue fern?
It is not necessary, but it appreciates somewhat higher humidity. In a room with dry air, it helps to mist it occasionally or place it near other plants.
