The Dracaena dossier
Dracaena
The Dracaena grows in the tropics of Africa, where some species grow into centuries-old trees. Its name means dragon's blood tree, after the red resin that some species produce.
In the home, the Dracaena has an architectural appearance: characterful trunks with crowns of graceful, often drawn leaves.

Placement and light
The Dracaena has few requirements: a place with average light is enough, although it grows faster the lighter it is. Only avoid bright afternoon sun on the leaves.
It is also easy in terms of temperature; above 12 degrees is fine. Variegated leaves keep their markings best in a lighter spot.
Water and feeding
The Dracaena drinks little: only water when the top half of the potting soil feels dry. In summer, once a week is more than sufficient, in winter once every two to three weeks.
Too much water is the biggest pitfall; the thick trunks store moisture themselves. Feeding is only necessary once a month during the growing season.
Is something wrong with your Dracaena?
Yellow leaves and a soft trunk indicate too much water. Brown leaf tips indicate dry air or fluorine in tap water; spraying helps. It is normal that the bottom leaf gradually falls off, so the characteristic bare trunk grows. Check sticky leaves for scale.
A Dracaena grows slowly and only needs to be repotted once every three years, preferably in the spring. Choose a slightly larger, stable pot and well-drained soil. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.
Toxic to pets?
The Dracaena contains saponins and is poisonous to cats and dogs. Cats in particular like to nibble on the long leaves, causing salivation and vomiting. Place it out of reach of pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.
The Dracaena grows quietly and compactly; its trunks only grow a few centimeters longer each year. Large specimens are therefore many years old and retain their shape almost automatically.
A Dracaena Riki grows slowly and gets a little taller indoors over the years as the crowns on top of the stems keep growing. Because it grows so steadily, you buy the height you want. XXLplant sells the Dracaena Riki at 140 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot.
Where should you place a Dracaena Riki?
A Dracaena Riki likes a bright spot or partial shade, away from direct midday sun. It copes with less light better than many other large houseplants. Keep it above 13 °C and out of draughts.
How often should you water a Dracaena Riki?
Give a Dracaena Riki little to moderate water and let the soil dry out between waterings. Wet feet are the biggest threat. In winter there can be a long gap between waterings.
Why is my Dracaena Riki getting brown leaf tips?
Brown tips on a Dracaena Riki are usually caused by dry air, too much water or hard tap water. Water a little less often and use rainwater if you can. The odd old leaf at the bottom drying out is normal.
Is a Dracaena Riki toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, the Dracaena Riki is toxic to cats and dogs. Eating the leaves can cause vomiting and drooling. Keep it out of reach of pets.
How is a Dracaena Riki delivered?
XXLplant ships the Dracaena Riki upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. The largest plants go with a specialist carrier, others with PostNL or DHL. In frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack.
