The Dracaena dossier
Dracaena
The Dracaena grows in the tropics of Africa, where some species grow into centuries-old trees. Its name means dragon's blood tree, after the red resin that some species produce.
In the home, the Dracaena has an architectural appearance: characterful trunks with crowns of graceful, often drawn leaves.

Placement and light
The Dracaena has few requirements: a place with average light is enough, although it grows faster the lighter it is. Only avoid bright afternoon sun on the leaves.
It is also easy in terms of temperature; above 12 degrees is fine. Variegated leaves keep their markings best in a lighter spot.
Water and feeding
The Dracaena drinks little: only water when the top half of the potting soil feels dry. In summer, once a week is more than sufficient, in winter once every two to three weeks.
Too much water is the biggest pitfall; the thick trunks store moisture themselves. Feeding is only necessary once a month during the growing season.
Is something wrong with your Dracaena?
Yellow leaves and a soft trunk indicate too much water. Brown leaf tips indicate dry air or fluorine in tap water; spraying helps. It is normal that the bottom leaf gradually falls off, so the characteristic bare trunk grows. Check sticky leaves for scale.
A Dracaena grows slowly and only needs to be repotted once every three years, preferably in the spring. Choose a slightly larger, stable pot and well-drained soil. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.
Toxic to pets?
The Dracaena contains saponins and is poisonous to cats and dogs. Cats in particular like to nibble on the long leaves, causing salivation and vomiting. Place it out of reach of pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.
The Dracaena grows quietly and compactly; its trunks only grow a few centimeters longer each year. Large specimens are therefore many years old and retain their shape almost automatically.
Indoors a Dracaena marginata grows slowly and can reach 2 to 3 metres after years. This plant is 160 cm tall on delivery including nursery pot, in a ø27 cm pot. You can shorten a stem that is too long, after which it forms new heads below the cut.
Where is the best place for a Dracaena Bicolor?
In a bright spot, for example by an east- or west-facing window. It also does well in semi-shade, but the leaves keep their best colour in good light. It does not like strong midday sun and draughts.
How often should you water a Dracaena Bicolor?
Sparingly: let the top few centimetres of the potting soil dry out before watering again. In summer that is about once every week to ten days, less in winter. Too much water is the most common cause of root rot.
Is a Dracaena Bicolor toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes. According to the ASPCA, the Dracaena Bicolor is toxic to cats and dogs. Chewing the leaves can cause vomiting, drooling and reduced appetite. Keep it out of reach if your pet likes to nibble on plants.
Why does my Dracaena Bicolor get brown leaf tips?
Brown tips are usually caused by dry air, hard tap water or a root ball that stayed dry for too long. Lower leaves occasionally turning yellow and dropping is normal: that is how the bare stem forms.
How is a 160 cm dragon tree delivered?
The dragon tree travels upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. Large plants are delivered by our own courier, and in frost or heat a heat pack or cold pack is included. If the plant arrives damaged, send us photos and we will arrange a solution.
