Het mag wel wat plant vriendelijker worden bezorgd. De plant kwam een beetje beschadigd aan. Door dat de bladeren op een onjuiste manier in de doos waren gestopt. Verder is het een mooie plant.

The Dracaena dossier

Dracaena

The Dracaena grows in the tropics of Africa, where some species grow into centuries-old trees. Its name means dragon's blood tree, after the red resin that some species produce.

In the home, the Dracaena has an architectural appearance: characterful trunks with crowns of graceful, often drawn leaves.

Placement and light

The Dracaena has few requirements: a place with average light is enough, although it grows faster the lighter it is. Only avoid bright afternoon sun on the leaves.

It is also easy in terms of temperature; above 12 degrees is fine. Variegated leaves keep their markings best in a lighter spot.

Water and feeding

The Dracaena drinks little: only water when the top half of the potting soil feels dry. In summer, once a week is more than sufficient, in winter once every two to three weeks.

Too much water is the biggest pitfall; the thick trunks store moisture themselves. Feeding is only necessary once a month during the growing season.

Is something wrong with your Dracaena?

Yellow leaves and a soft trunk indicate too much water. Brown leaf tips indicate dry air or fluorine in tap water; spraying helps. It is normal that the bottom leaf gradually falls off, so the characteristic bare trunk grows. Check sticky leaves for scale.

Repotting and pot choice

A Dracaena grows slowly and only needs to be repotted once every three years, preferably in the spring. Choose a slightly larger, stable pot and well-drained soil. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.

Toxic to pets?

The Dracaena contains saponins and is poisonous to cats and dogs. Cats in particular like to nibble on the long leaves, causing salivation and vomiting. Place it out of reach of pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.

Growth and size

The Dracaena grows quietly and compactly; its trunks only grow a few centimeters longer each year. Large specimens are therefore many years old and retain their shape almost automatically.

How big does a Dracaena marginata grow?
Indoors, a Dracaena marginata can reach two to three metres over the years, with bare stems topped by tufts of narrow leaves. At XXLplant you buy it from 180 to 220 cm tall, both single-stem and branched. We measure the height including the nursery pot.
Which Dracaena marginata should you choose: branched or with straight stems?
A branched Dracaena marginata has quirky, curving stems and looks like a sculpture. A version with straight stems is sleeker and fits well into a narrow corner. Both need the same care.
Is a Dracaena marginata toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, the Dracaena marginata is toxic to cats and dogs according to the ASPCA. Eating the leaves can cause vomiting and drooling. Place it where pets cannot reach it.
Where should you place a Dracaena marginata?
Place the Dracaena marginata in a bright spot or in partial shade, without harsh afternoon sun. It copes well with room temperature, but not below about 12 °C. With more light the red leaf edge stays more vivid.
How often should you water a Dracaena marginata?
Water sparingly and let the soil dry out for the most part between waterings. Water even less in winter. Too much water is the most common cause of problems.
Why is my Dracaena marginata getting yellow leaves?
It's normal for the lower leaves to slowly turn yellow and fall off; that's how the bare trunk forms. If many leaves turn yellow at once, the soil is often too wet or the plant is too dark. Let the soil dry out more and move it somewhere brighter.
How is a Dracaena marginata delivered?
Your plant travels upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. The largest plants go with a specialised carrier, otherwise with PostNL or DHL. It usually arrives within 4 to 5 working days.
