The Dracaena dossier
Dracaena
The Dracaena grows in the tropics of Africa, where some species grow into centuries-old trees. Its name means dragon's blood tree, after the red resin that some species produce.
In the home, the Dracaena has an architectural appearance: characterful trunks with crowns of graceful, often drawn leaves.

Placement and light
The Dracaena has few requirements: a place with average light is enough, although it grows faster the lighter it is. Only avoid bright afternoon sun on the leaves.
It is also easy in terms of temperature; above 12 degrees is fine. Variegated leaves keep their markings best in a lighter spot.
Water and feeding
The Dracaena drinks little: only water when the top half of the potting soil feels dry. In summer, once a week is more than sufficient, in winter once every two to three weeks.
Too much water is the biggest pitfall; the thick trunks store moisture themselves. Feeding is only necessary once a month during the growing season.
Is something wrong with your Dracaena?
Yellow leaves and a soft trunk indicate too much water. Brown leaf tips indicate dry air or fluorine in tap water; spraying helps. It is normal that the bottom leaf gradually falls off, so the characteristic bare trunk grows. Check sticky leaves for scale.
A Dracaena grows slowly and only needs to be repotted once every three years, preferably in the spring. Choose a slightly larger, stable pot and well-drained soil. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.
Toxic to pets?
The Dracaena contains saponins and is poisonous to cats and dogs. Cats in particular like to nibble on the long leaves, causing salivation and vomiting. Place it out of reach of pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.
The Dracaena grows quietly and compactly; its trunks only grow a few centimeters longer each year. Large specimens are therefore many years old and retain their shape almost automatically.
How big does a Dracaena fragrans 'Janet Lind' grow?
A Dracaena 'Janet Lind' grows steadily and can reach 2 metres or more indoors after some years. XXLplant sells it from 110 to 180 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot. So you immediately have a plant that fills an empty corner.
Should I choose a branched Dracaena 'Janet Lind' or a tall one?
A branched Dracaena 'Janet Lind' has several crowns of leaves, which makes it fuller and wider. The XXL plant of 180 cm is mainly tall and suits a room with a high ceiling. So look at the height and width you have available.
Where should you put a Dracaena 'Janet Lind'?
Place your Dracaena 'Janet Lind' in a bright spot without harsh afternoon sun; partial shade works too. That means it also suits spots further from the window. Keep it out of draughts and between 16 and 24 °C.
How often should you water a Dracaena 'Janet Lind'?
Water a Dracaena 'Janet Lind' sparingly and let the top layer of soil dry out first. Never leave water standing in the pot, as wet feet are the biggest risk. In winter give it even less.
Is a Dracaena 'Janet Lind' toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, a Dracaena is toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves contain saponins that can cause drooling, vomiting or stomach upsets. Keep it out of reach of pets that chew plants.
Why is my Dracaena getting brown leaf tips?
Brown tips on Dracaena leaves are often caused by dry air, hard tap water or irregular watering. A few brown tips on older leaves are normal. You can trim them off, and softer water helps.
How is a Dracaena 'Janet Lind' delivered?
Your Dracaena travels upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. The largest plants go with a specialist carrier, others with PostNL or DHL, and in frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack. It usually arrives within 4 to 5 working days.
