The Chamaerops dossier
Chamaerops humilis
The Chamaerops humilis is the only palm that grows naturally in Europe: from the rocky coasts of Spain to the hills of Morocco. Hence its nickname European dwarf palm.
With its wide fan leaves and rugged trunk, it is one of the strongest palms for the Dutch garden and terrace.

Placement and light
The Chamaerops prefers to be outside in full sun, in a warm and sheltered spot. It also tolerates partial shade well. Its shape looks best on the terrace in a large pot.
It is quite winter hardy: in the open ground it can tolerate frost down to around minus ten degrees. The roots are more vulnerable in a pot; In case of severe frost, protect the pot with bubble wrap or store it in a cool place.
Water and feeding
During the growing season, a Chamaerops in a pot drinks a lot: water as soon as the top centimeters are dry, several times a week during hot periods. Very sparingly in winter.
Drainage is essential: ensure that excess water can always drain away. Feed palms monthly from April to September.
Is something wrong with your Chamaerops?
Brown leaf tips are usually drought damage or wind damage and can be trimmed. Yellow leaves indicate soil that is too wet or a nutrient deficiency. An occasional dying lower leaf is normal. After a harsh winter, damaged leaves recover with new growth in the spring.
Repot the Chamaerops in late spring, approximately every three years. Choose a heavy, stable pot with ample drainage and use well-drained soil with some sand. Its roots like depth: prefer a high pot to a wide pot.
Toxic to pets?
The Chamaerops is not poisonous to cats and dogs. Just pay attention to the sharp spines on the leaf stems; they are more annoying than the magazine itself. Furthermore, a completely carefree garden palm for pet owners.
The Chamaerops grows slowly and becomes a fraction wider and rougher every year. Large specimens with a true trunk are decades old. So you buy a palm like that once, and it will last a lifetime.
Yes, the European fan palm is one of the hardiest palms and can cope with around -12 °C in open ground, sometimes a little more in a sheltered spot. In a pot the roots freeze more quickly, so in hard frost move the pot against a house wall and protect it with horticultural fleece. In winter, above all make sure the soil doesn't stay too wet.
Can a dwarf fan palm stand both outdoors and indoors?
A Chamaerops humilis prefers to stand outside in a sunny or partly shaded spot, sheltered from strong wind, such as on a patio or balcony. Indoors works too, but then it needs the brightest spot in the house, ideally a conservatory or a large south-facing window. Indoors it likes 15 to 25 °C.
How big does a dwarf fan palm get?
The European fan palm grows slowly and stays relatively compact; after many years it usually reaches about 2 to 3 metres. XXLplant sells it from 90 to 220 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot. You can choose a fan palm on a trunk, a full bush form or a multi-stem with several trunks.
Which European fan palm should I choose: standard, bush or multi-stem?
A dwarf fan palm on a stem has a clear trunk with a fan of leaves above it and gives a Mediterranean look beside the front door. A bush form is fuller from the pot up, and a multi-stem has several trunks and is the largest and widest size. Choose based on the width you have available.
How often should you water a dwarf fan palm?
In summer, keep the soil of a European fan palm slightly moist and let it dry out a little between waterings. In a pot outdoors it needs water more often in warm weather. Make sure it drains well and water much less in winter to prevent root rot.
Is a dwarf fan palm toxic to cats and dogs?
The dwarf palm is not known to be toxic to cats and dogs. Do watch out for the leaf stalks, though: they have sharp spines that can prick you, including when pruning.
How is a dwarf fan palm delivered?
Your dwarf palm travels upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. The largest plants are delivered by a specialist carrier, otherwise by PostNL or DHL. In frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack. It will usually be with you within 4 to 5 working days.
