The Banana plant dossier
Musa
The banana plant grows in the tropics of Asia, where it fills entire plantations with its enormous leaves. Technically it is not a tree but a huge herb: the trunk consists of rolled petioles.
Indoors, the Musa immediately creates a holiday feeling: no plant makes a tropical statement faster.

Placement and light
The banana plant loves light and warmth: a place in front of a large window with lots of sun is ideal, preferably south-facing. In summer it can also be sheltered outside.
Keep the temperature above 15 degrees and avoid drafts. Turn the plant regularly, because it grows quickly towards the light.
Water and feeding
Those large leaves evaporate a lot: in the summer the banana plant needs water two to three times a week. Keep the soil consistently slightly moist, but avoid a layer of water at the bottom of the pot. Things can be quieter in winter.
Spray the leaves regularly and feed every two weeks from March to September. This way the leaves remain large and deep green.
Is something wrong with your Banana plant?
Brown, cracking leaf edges are part of the banana plant; in nature the wind also tears the leaf. Yellow leaves indicate too much water, drooping leaves indicate thirst. An older leaf dying is normal: a new leaf is already rolled up and ready in the heart.
The banana plant grows fast and can therefore use a larger pot every year or every other year in the spring. Choose a sturdy pot that is twenty percent wider and use nutritious potting soil. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.
Toxic to pets?
The banana plant is completely safe for cats and dogs: the leaves and stem are not poisonous. One of the best choices for a tropical interior with pets.
The Musa is one of the fastest growers you can bring into your home: during the season, a new leaf emerges from the heart every few weeks. Our XXL ones immediately stand tall in the room.
A banana plant can grow quickly indoors in a bright spot and reach two metres or more, depending on the variety and the pot size. New leaves follow one another quickly in the growing season. XXLplant sells the Musa from 80 to 140 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot.
Can a banana plant stand outside?
In summer a banana plant can stand outside in a sheltered, bright spot, out of the wind so the leaves don't tear. This Musa is not hardy: below 12 °C it gets too cold. Bring it indoors in good time in autumn.
Where should you put a banana plant indoors?
Indoors, place a banana plant in the brightest spot you have, with at least five hours of light a day. Avoid harsh midday sun just after purchase so the leaves can adjust. Keep it out of draughts and away from cold spots.
How often should you water a banana plant?
A banana plant needs a lot of water: keep the soil slightly moist and in summer water it up to twice a week. Let the top layer dry out a little in between and avoid waterlogged roots. In winter, water noticeably less.
Why is my banana plant getting brown leaves?
Brown edges on a banana plant are usually caused by dry air, too little water or draughts. Mist the leaves regularly or put a humidifier nearby. You can simply cut off old, torn or yellow leaves.
Is a banana plant toxic to cats and dogs?
The banana plant is known to be non-toxic to cats and dogs. So chewing on the leaves is no cause for concern, although a pet can damage the large leaves.
How is a banana plant delivered?
XXLplant ships the banana plant upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. The largest plants are delivered by a specialist carrier, otherwise by PostNL or DHL. In frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack.
