The Citrus tree dossier
Citrus
Citrus trees originate from Southeast Asia and conquered the world via the Mediterranean Sea. Orange, lemon and mandarin bring the Mediterranean summer to your patio with their shiny leaves, fragrant blossoms and colorful fruits.
A citrus tree is a real orangery plant: outside in the sun in the summer, cool and light inside in the winter.

Placement and light
Place a citrus tree outside from May to October in a warm, sunny and sheltered spot, preferably against a south wall. Sun is the driving force behind blossoms and fruits.
Citrus is not winter hardy: hibernate it in a cool and light place, ideally between 5 and 12 degrees, for example in a conservatory, greenhouse or bright garage. A warm living room is unsuitable in winter.
Water and feeding
Water regularly in summer, as soon as the top few inches of soil are dry; on hot days this can be daily. Preferably use rainwater and ensure perfect drainage. During winter dormancy the tree drinks little.
Provide special citrus food every two weeks from March to October; it contains the extra iron and magnesium that citrus needs.
Is something wrong with your Citrus tree?
Yellow leaves in citrus often indicate an iron deficiency or soil that is too wet. Leaf fall in winter usually means: overwintering too warm and too dark. Falling fruits are partly natural; the tree keeps what it can bear. Check for scale and mealybugs, especially indoors.
Repot a citrus tree in early spring, every two to three years. Use special citrus or Mediterranean potting soil with excellent drainage and a pot with ample water drainage. Don't choose the pot too large; citrus blooms better with the roots slightly tighter.
Toxic to pets?
Citrus leaves and peels contain essential oils that are mildly toxic to cats and dogs. Fortunately, the smell deters most animals. Serious poisoning is rare, but do not allow pets to chew leaves or fruits.
A citrus tree grows moderately and is mainly concerned with flowering and setting fruit: with the right sun and nutrition you can expect blossoms and fruits every year. Prune lightly in the spring for a beautiful, open crown.
The white flowers of the orange tree are called orange blossom. They have a strong, sweet scent. The pollinated flowers then go on to produce the oranges.
Is an orange tree hardy?
No, an orange tree is not hardy. Bring it indoors before the first night frost and let it overwinter in a bright spot at around 5 to 12 °C, for example in a cold conservatory or a bright garage. From May to October it can stand outside in a sheltered, sunny spot.
Can an orange tree be kept indoors?
In winter it belongs indoors, but preferably somewhere cool and bright. Keeping it in a warm living room all year usually goes wrong, as it is too dark and too warm there; it drops leaves and flowers poorly. So put it outside in the sun in summer.
How big does an orange tree grow in a pot?
In a pot an orange tree stays much smaller than in open ground, and you can keep it to size by pruning. At XXLplant you buy an orange tree of 200 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot. That gives you a mature tree for your patio or conservatory straight away.
Why is my orange tree not flowering?
Too little light is the most common cause, especially if it spends the winter somewhere too warm and too dark. A cool, bright overwintering and a sunny summer outdoors help get it flowering. Feed it citrus fertiliser every two weeks from March to September.
Is an orange tree toxic to cats and dogs?
The leaves and peel of the orange tree are toxic to cats and dogs. Put it somewhere pets can't chew the leaves. The fruit itself is perfectly edible for people.
How is an orange tree delivered?
The tree travels upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. The largest plants go with a specialist carrier, others with PostNL or DHL. In frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack.
