All about
The Philodendron dossier
Philodendron
The Philodendron grows in the rainforests of South America, where most species climb trees as climbers. His name literally means tree friend.
The family is extremely versatile: from compact shrub forms to climbers with leaves as large as a hole-in-the-wall plant.

Placement and light
A Philodendron feels at home in a bright spot without direct sun, but will also settle for partial shade. The darker the spot, the smaller the new leaf.
Keep the temperature above 15 degrees. Climbing species appreciate a moss stick; which stimulates larger leaves.
Water and feeding
Allow the top centimeters of potting soil to dry before watering again: about once a week in summer, less in winter. The Philodendron forgives a forgotten watering more easily than wet feet.
Feed every two weeks from April to September and wipe the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth.
Is something wrong with your Philodendron?
Yellow leaves indicate too much water, drooping leaves indicate thirst. Small new leaves mean too little light or nutrition. Drops on the leaf edges are harmless. Spider mites can appear in dry air, although the Philodendron is less sensitive to it than many other tropical plants.
Repot the Philodendron every two years in the spring in a pot that is one size larger, with airy, humus-rich potting soil. Immediately give climbers a longer moss stick. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.
Toxic to pets?
The Philodendron contains calcium oxalate and is poisonous to cats and dogs. Chewing the leaf irritates the mouth and stomach. Place the plant out of reach of nibbling pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.
A Philodendron grows smoothly with warmth and light; climbers visibly make progress in a season. Each new leaf grows larger as the plant climbs higher.
A Philodendron Brasil is a climber and trailer that keeps growing as long as you give it support. On a mesh frame or moss pole it forms a green wall or column. XXLplant sells it from 150 to 160 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot.
What is the difference between a Philodendron Brasil on a mesh trellis and on a moss pole?
On a mesh trellis the Philodendron Brasil spreads out into a flat green wall, handy as a room divider or against a wall. On a moss pole it forms a round, columnar plant. The care is the same for both.
Where should you put a Philodendron Brasil?
A Philodendron Brasil likes a bright spot out of direct sun. In a spot that is too dark the yellow-green markings on the leaves fade and it can revert to plain green. Keep it above 15 °C.
How often should you water a Philodendron Brasil?
Water a Philodendron Brasil when the top layer of soil is dry. Do not leave water standing in the decorative pot. It needs less water in winter.
Is a Philodendron Brasil toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, the Philodendron Brasil is toxic to cats and dogs. Chewing the leaves causes irritation of the mouth and stomach. Keep it out of reach of pets.
How is a Philodendron Brasil delivered?
XXLplant ships the Philodendron Brasil upright in its own plant box, with the plant in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. The largest plants are delivered by a specialist carrier, otherwise by PostNL or DHL. In frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack.
