All about
The Philodendron dossier
Philodendron
The Philodendron grows in the rainforests of South America, where most species climb trees as climbers. His name literally means tree friend.
The family is extremely versatile: from compact shrub forms to climbers with leaves as large as a hole-in-the-wall plant.

Placement and light
A Philodendron feels at home in a bright spot without direct sun, but will also settle for partial shade. The darker the spot, the smaller the new leaf.
Keep the temperature above 15 degrees. Climbing species appreciate a moss stick; which stimulates larger leaves.
Water and feeding
Allow the top centimeters of potting soil to dry before watering again: about once a week in summer, less in winter. The Philodendron forgives a forgotten watering more easily than wet feet.
Feed every two weeks from April to September and wipe the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth.
Is something wrong with your Philodendron?
Yellow leaves indicate too much water, drooping leaves indicate thirst. Small new leaves mean too little light or nutrition. Drops on the leaf edges are harmless. Spider mites can appear in dry air, although the Philodendron is less sensitive to it than many other tropical plants.
Repot the Philodendron every two years in the spring in a pot that is one size larger, with airy, humus-rich potting soil. Immediately give climbers a longer moss stick. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.
Toxic to pets?
The Philodendron contains calcium oxalate and is poisonous to cats and dogs. Chewing the leaf irritates the mouth and stomach. Place the plant out of reach of nibbling pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.
A Philodendron grows smoothly with warmth and light; climbers visibly make progress in a season. Each new leaf grows larger as the plant climbs higher.
A Philodendron xanadu does not grow as a climber, but forms a broad, dense clump of deeply cut leaves. Over the years it often becomes wider than it is tall. XXLplant sells it from 70 to 100 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot.
Where should you place a Philodendron xanadu?
A Philodendron xanadu likes a bright to partially shaded spot, without harsh afternoon sun. It does need space, as the leaves grow in all directions. Keep it out of draughts and away from spots below 13 °C.
How often should you water a Philodendron xanadu?
Give a Philodendron xanadu moderate water and let the top layer of soil dry out between waterings. It needs less in winter. Don't leave water in the decorative pot.
Why is my Philodendron xanadu getting yellow leaves?
Yellow leaves on a Philodendron xanadu are usually caused by too much water or too little light. Let the soil dry out a bit more in between and move it somewhere brighter. The odd old leaf at the bottom turning yellow is part of normal growth.
Is a Philodendron xanadu toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, the Philodendron xanadu is toxic to cats and dogs. The sap irritates the mouth and stomach if an animal chews the leaves. Keep it out of their reach.
How is a Philodendron xanadu delivered?
XXLplant ships the Philodendron xanadu upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot held firmly in place. In frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack.
