The Sansevieria dossier

Dracaena trifasciata (syn. Sansevieria trifasciata)

The snake plant comes from tropical West Africa, from Nigeria to the Congo. There it grows in open, dry areas among rocks and shrubs, in soil that can stay dry for a long time. Its thick leaves and rhizomes act as a water reservoir.

The name Zeylanica refers to Ceylon, the old name for Sri Lanka. In the nursery trade it stands for a dark green form with grey-green bands and no yellow edge.

Placement and light

A bright spot is ideal, with some morning or evening sun if possible. The plant also tolerates partial shade and even a dark corner, but hardly grows there and then needs even less water.

Keep the temperature above 12 degrees and avoid cold draughts. Dry indoor air is no problem; misting isn't needed and water in the rosette can actually cause rot.

Water and feeding

Only water when the soil is completely dry, including at the bottom of the pot. In summer that is usually once every two to four weeks, in winter once every four to six weeks or less.

Pour along the edge of the pot and tip away any water still standing in the decorative pot after fifteen minutes. From April to September, feed at half strength about once a month.

Is something wrong with your Sansevieria?

Soft, yellow or glassy leaf bases point to too much water and root rot; that is by far the most common reason a snake plant dies. Limp or falling leaves are often caused by too little light combined with too much water.

Brown, dry tips come from damage or a long dry spell. Mealybugs can hide in the leaf axils; wipe them off with a cloth dipped in methylated spirit.

Repotting and pot choice

Only repot when the rhizomes fill the pot or the nursery pot starts to bulge, usually every two to three years in spring. Choose a pot one size larger with a drainage hole and use free-draining soil such as cactus mix with perlite.

Large plants are top-heavy; a heavy ceramic pot keeps them from tipping over. You'll find matching decorative pots right on this page.

Toxic to pets?

The snake plant contains saponins and is listed by the ASPCA as toxic to cats and dogs. Chewing or eating it can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Symptoms are usually mild, but keep the plant out of reach of pets that like to nibble on plants.

Growth and size

The snake plant grows slowly. In a bright, warm spot a few new leaves appear during the growing season, often as a shoot next to the existing leaves. In a dark spot growth almost stops, and that is not a problem.

How big does a Sansevieria Laurentii grow?
A Sansevieria Laurentii grows slowly, and leaves of around a metre are already large for this snake plant. It mainly gets fuller as new leaves come up from the soil. XXLplant sells it from 90 to 100 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot.
Where should you put a Sansevieria Laurentii?
A Sansevieria Laurentii can stand anywhere from a sunny spot to partial shade. In a dark corner it will survive, but it grows more slowly and the yellow edge becomes less vivid. Keep it above 10 °C.
How often should you water a Sansevieria Laurentii?
Only water a Sansevieria Laurentii once the soil is completely dry. In winter that is roughly once a month. Too much water is the most common cause of rotting leaf bases.
Is a Sansevieria Laurentii toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, the Sansevieria Laurentii is toxic to cats and dogs. Eating the leaves can cause nausea and stomach and intestinal problems. Keep it out of reach of pets that chew plants.
Is a Sansevieria Laurentii a good plant for beginners?
Yes, the Sansevieria Laurentii is one of the easiest houseplants. It copes with dry air, forgotten waterings and a spot with little light. The only thing to watch is not giving it too much water.
How is a Sansevieria Laurentii delivered?
XXLplant ships the snake plant upright in its own plant box, with the leaves in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. In frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack. It is usually delivered within 4 to 5 working days.
