All about
The Schefflera dossier
Schefflera arboricola
The Schefflera comes from Taiwan and southern China, where it grows as a small tree. Its leaves stand like fingers on a hand, hence the nickname finger tree.
It is one of the most rewarding houseplants: fast growing, full and almost always happy.

Placement and light
The Schefflera does well in a light spot without bright afternoon sun, but also accepts partial shade. Variegated varieties need more light to maintain their markings.
Keep the temperature above 12 degrees and avoid drafts. In the summer it can be sheltered outside.
Water and feeding
Water as soon as the top centimeters of soil are dry: about once a week in summer, once every two weeks in winter. The Schefflera would rather be a little too dry than too wet.
Feed every two weeks from March to September. Wiping the leaves occasionally keeps them shiny.
Is something wrong with your Schefflera?
Leaf loss in Schefflera is usually a sign of too much water or a place that is too dark. Yellow leaves indicate wet feet, sticky leaves indicate scale insects; this is the most common pest on this plant. Bare growth means a lack of light: then prune it into shape.
Repot the Schefflera every two to three years in the spring in a pot that is one size larger. Standard potting soil is sufficient; make sure there is drainage. Large specimens appreciate a sturdy pot. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.
Toxic to pets?
The Schefflera contains calcium oxalate and is poisonous to cats and dogs. Chewing irritates the mouth and stomach. Place the plant out of reach of nibbling pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.
The Schefflera is a fast grower that can grow tens of centimeters per year with light and nutrition. Pruning is always allowed and will only make it fuller. Our XXL specimens have already been grown into full-fledged house trees.
A schefflera can grow indoors into a sizeable indoor tree of two metres or more. At XXLplant you can buy scheffleras from 130 to 200 cm tall, some as standards. We measure the height including the nursery pot.
What is the difference between a standard schefflera and a full schefflera?
A standard schefflera has a bare trunk topped by a round crown and takes up little space at the bottom. A full plant is leafy from top to bottom and fills a corner or acts as a green screen. Choose the standard if you want to put something underneath it or if floor space is limited.
Where should you place a schefflera?
A schefflera does best in a bright spot with indirect light or partial shade, for example near an east- or west-facing window. Avoid harsh midday sun. Turn the plant now and then so it grows evenly.
How often should you water a schefflera?
Water a schefflera about once a week in summer and every one to two weeks in winter. Let the top layer of soil dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid waterlogged roots, as this causes root rot.
Is a schefflera toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, a schefflera is toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves can irritate the mouth and stomach when chewed. Place it where pets cannot nibble on it.
Why is my schefflera losing leaves after delivery?
After moving to a new spot a schefflera has to get used to different light and a different temperature, and it may drop a few leaves. Draughts, too little light or soil that is too wet also cause leaf drop. Give it a bright spot out of draughts and only water once the top layer is dry; it usually recovers within a few weeks.
How is a schefflera delivered?
Your schefflera travels upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. The largest plants go with a specialist carrier, otherwise with PostNL or DHL. Delivery usually takes 4 to 5 working days.
