The Philodendron dossier

Philodendron

The Philodendron grows in the rainforests of South America, where most species climb trees as climbers. His name literally means tree friend.

The family is extremely versatile: from compact shrub forms to climbers with leaves as large as a hole-in-the-wall plant.

Placement and light

A Philodendron feels at home in a bright spot without direct sun, but will also settle for partial shade. The darker the spot, the smaller the new leaf.

Keep the temperature above 15 degrees. Climbing species appreciate a moss stick; which stimulates larger leaves.

Water and feeding

Allow the top centimeters of potting soil to dry before watering again: about once a week in summer, less in winter. The Philodendron forgives a forgotten watering more easily than wet feet.

Feed every two weeks from April to September and wipe the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth.

Is something wrong with your Philodendron?

Yellow leaves indicate too much water, drooping leaves indicate thirst. Small new leaves mean too little light or nutrition. Drops on the leaf edges are harmless. Spider mites can appear in dry air, although the Philodendron is less sensitive to it than many other tropical plants.

Repotting and pot choice

Repot the Philodendron every two years in the spring in a pot that is one size larger, with airy, humus-rich potting soil. Immediately give climbers a longer moss stick. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.

Toxic to pets?

The Philodendron contains calcium oxalate and is poisonous to cats and dogs. Chewing the leaf irritates the mouth and stomach. Place the plant out of reach of nibbling pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.

Growth and size

A Philodendron grows smoothly with warmth and light; climbers visibly make progress in a season. Each new leaf grows larger as the plant climbs higher.

Is Philodendron scandens the same as Philodendron hederaceum?
Yes, Philodendron scandens is the old name for Philodendron hederaceum. Shops still use both names interchangeably for the same climber with heart-shaped leaves. So the care is exactly the same.
How big does a Philodendron scandens grow?
As a climber, the Philodendron scandens can produce vines several metres long, as long as it has something to grow along. At XXLplant you buy it from 120 to 160 cm tall, trained on a mesh trellis. We measure the height including the nursery pot.
Where should you put a Philodendron scandens?
Place it in a bright spot out of direct sun. Lower light is also fine, but it will grow more slowly and the leaves will be spaced further apart. Keep the temperature between 18 and 25 °C, not below 15 °C.
How often should you water a Philodendron scandens?
Water when the top layer of soil is dry. Don't leave water standing in the pot, as wet feet cause root rot. It needs less in winter than in summer.
Can you take cuttings from a Philodendron scandens?
Yes, that's easy. Cut off a piece of vine just below a node, put it in water or moist compost and roots will appear within a few weeks. You can also make the plant fuller this way by putting cuttings back into the pot.
Is a Philodendron scandens toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, Philodendron scandens is toxic to cats and dogs. Chewing the leaves irritates the mouth and throat. Keep it out of reach of pets.
How is a Philodendron scandens delivered?
Your plant is shipped upright in its own plant box, with the leaves in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. In frost or heat, we add a heat pack or cold pack. Within the Netherlands, orders placed Sunday to Wednesday are usually delivered within 2-3 working days.
