An aloe vera forms a rosette of thick, fleshy leaves and can grow considerably over the years. XXLplant sells large aloe veras 70 cm tall, in a 19 or 24 cm pot, measured including the nursery pot. A larger pot gives you a wider, heavier plant.
Where should you put an aloe vera?
An aloe vera wants as much light and sun as possible, for example on a sunny south-facing windowsill. In summer it can stand outside in a sheltered spot. It is not hardy, so bring it in on time.
How often should you water an aloe vera?
Only water once the soil is completely dry. In summer that is roughly once every 2 to 3 weeks, in winter hardly at all. The leaves store moisture, so too much water is far more dangerous than too little.
Can you take cuttings from an aloe vera?
Yes, an aloe vera often produces young offsets at its base. You can detach them in spring once they have a few leaves of their own and pot them in dry cactus compost. Give them hardly any water in the first week so the cuts can dry out.
Is aloe vera toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, aloe vera is toxic to cats and dogs. The yellow sap just beneath the leaf skin can cause vomiting and diarrhoea. Keep the plant out of reach of pets.
Why is my aloe vera going soft or brown?
Soft, glassy leaves almost always point to too much water. Brown or red discolouration can come from sudden bright sun after a dark period; that usually fades again. Let the soil dry out properly and use a pot with drainage.
