The Caryota Mitis is known as the fishtail palm thanks to its distinctive, triangular leaves. This exotic eye-catcher creates a unique, tropical ambiance in any room. Perfect for those looking for something a little different than a standard palm.

Species: Caryota mitis

The fishtail palm (Caryota mitis) has leaves made up of triangular leaflets with a ragged tip, so that they resemble a fish's tail. It grows with several stems from one pot, making it full and broad. This indoor palm is available in several sizes, from a size for beside the sofa to a larger plant for a bright corner or an office. Give it a bright spot out of harsh midday sun; it also tolerates partial shade. Keep the soil lightly moist, don't let it dry out completely and make sure no water is left standing in the decorative pot. Slightly higher humidity helps prevent brown leaf tips. The palm is supplied in the grow pot, and a decorative pot is chosen separately.

Plant care

Location: Bright, indirect light to partial shade; avoid direct sunlight. It thrives in dark locations, but grows best in ample light.
Water: Keep the potting soil constantly slightly moist, but avoid wet feet. Water every 5-7 days in summer, and every other week in winter. Check with your finger to see if the top layer has dried slightly before watering again.
Feeding: Feed palm tree once a month in spring and summer. Do not fertilize in winter. Never use more than the recommended amount.
Temperature: Minimum 15°C during the day, not below 7°C at night. Prefers high humidity.

Extra tips:
• Spray the foliage regularly to increase humidity and remove dust.
• Remove dead or brown leaves for a fresh look.
• Repot every 2-3 years in spring.
• Please note: brown edges on the lower leaves are normal, the plant will automatically produce new leaves.

Flowering

A Caryota mitis rarely flowers indoors. Only older palms in a very bright spot produce hanging flower clusters, and a stem that has flowered then slowly dies back while the other stems keep growing. You mainly buy this palm for its foliage. The plant is usually not in flower on delivery.

Plant height may vary by up to 10 cm. Height includes the nursery pot. The nursery pot may differ from the one in the photo.

A Caryota mitis keeps growing steadily indoors to around 2.5 to 3 metres, provided it gets enough light and room in the pot. XXLplant sells the fishtail palm from 110 to 250 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot. It grows from several stems, so it also gets wider.

A Caryota mitis looks its best in a bright spot with indirect light or partial shade. Direct sunlight scorches the leaves. It tolerates a somewhat darker spot, but will grow more slowly there.
