All about
The Citrus tree dossier
Citrus
Citrus trees originate from Southeast Asia and conquered the world via the Mediterranean Sea. Orange, lemon and mandarin bring the Mediterranean summer to your patio with their shiny leaves, fragrant blossoms and colorful fruits.
A citrus tree is a real orangery plant: outside in the sun in the summer, cool and light inside in the winter.

Placement and light
Place a citrus tree outside from May to October in a warm, sunny and sheltered spot, preferably against a south wall. Sun is the driving force behind blossoms and fruits.
Citrus is not winter hardy: hibernate it in a cool and light place, ideally between 5 and 12 degrees, for example in a conservatory, greenhouse or bright garage. A warm living room is unsuitable in winter.
Water and feeding
Water regularly in summer, as soon as the top few inches of soil are dry; on hot days this can be daily. Preferably use rainwater and ensure perfect drainage. During winter dormancy the tree drinks little.
Provide special citrus food every two weeks from March to October; it contains the extra iron and magnesium that citrus needs.
Is something wrong with your Citrus tree?
Yellow leaves in citrus often indicate an iron deficiency or soil that is too wet. Leaf fall in winter usually means: overwintering too warm and too dark. Falling fruits are partly natural; the tree keeps what it can bear. Check for scale and mealybugs, especially indoors.
Repot a citrus tree in early spring, every two to three years. Use special citrus or Mediterranean potting soil with excellent drainage and a pot with ample water drainage. Don't choose the pot too large; citrus blooms better with the roots slightly tighter.
Toxic to pets?
Citrus leaves and peels contain essential oils that are mildly toxic to cats and dogs. Fortunately, the smell deters most animals. Serious poisoning is rare, but do not allow pets to chew leaves or fruits.
A citrus tree grows moderately and is mainly concerned with flowering and setting fruit: with the right sun and nutrition you can expect blossoms and fruits every year. Prune lightly in the spring for a beautiful, open crown.
No, a lemon tree is not hardy. Put it outdoors in a sunny spot in summer and bring it inside before the first frost. Overwinter it somewhere bright and cool, at a minimum of 5 to 10 °C and away from radiators.
How big does a lemon tree get in a pot?
In a pot a lemon tree stays limited in size, depending on the pot size and how you prune it. A prune in spring keeps it compact and full. XXLplant sells the lemon tree at 80 to 200 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot.
When should you prune a lemon tree?
Prune a lemon tree in spring, before new growth starts. Shorten overly long branches and remove any growing inwards, so the crown stays open and full. Do not prune too hard if there is already blossom or young fruit on the tree.
Can a lemon tree be kept indoors?
A lemon tree can stand indoors if it gets at least five to six hours of direct sunlight a day, for example in front of a south-facing window. Outdoors in summer it usually grows and flowers better. Warm, dry air near the radiator can cause leaf drop.
How often should you water a lemon tree?
Keep the soil of a lemon tree lightly moist and let the top layer dry out between waterings. Water more often in spring and summer, and about once a month in winter. Use a pot with good drainage to prevent root rot.
When does a lemon tree produce fruit?
A lemon tree forms fruit after flowering, and a lemon then needs many months to ripen and turn yellow. As a result, blossom, green fruit and yellow fruit can all be on the tree at the same time. Plenty of light and citrus feed during the growing season help the fruit to set.
Is a lemon tree toxic to cats and dogs?
Citrus is listed by the ASPCA as toxic to cats and dogs, because the leaves and peel contain essential oils. A pet that chews on it may get stomach and intestinal problems. Better to keep it out of reach of animals that nibble plants.
