All about
The Pachira dossier
Pachira aquatica
The Pachira aquatica grows in the swamps of Central and South America, where its base widens to store moisture. Its braided trunk and fresh palmate leaves made it world famous as a money tree, a symbol of luck and prosperity.
That thick trunk is its secret weapon: a built-in water supply.

Placement and light
The Pachira likes a light spot, but without direct midday sun. It also holds up well in a place with less light; growth is then mainly slower.
Keep the temperature above 12 degrees and avoid cold drafts. Turn the plant occasionally for an even crown.
Water and feeding
Thanks to its water-storing trunk, the Pachira requires little water: only water when the potting soil is largely dry. In summer about once a week to a week and a half, in winter once every three weeks.
Too much water is the only way to make a Pachira truly unhappy. Feeding: once a month during the growing season.
Is something wrong with your Pachira?
Yellow or falling leaves almost always indicate too much water; let the root ball dry thoroughly. A soft trunk is an alarm signal of root rot. Brown leaf tips indicate dry air. If it loses leaves after a move, give it a few weeks of rest; he recovers quickly.
Repot the Pachira every two to three years in the spring. Choose a pot that is one size larger and use airy, well-drained potting soil, possibly with some sand. The braided trunk simply remains in shape. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.
Toxic to pets?
The Pachira is not poisonous to cats and dogs. Even the leaves are harmless to a nibbling cat. Together with its easy-going nature, this makes it an ideal family plant.
The Pachira grows quietly and maintains its compact, tree-like shape almost automatically. You can cut back new shoots at the top for a fuller crown. The characteristic braided trunks have been years in the making at the nursery.
Indoors a Pachira aquatica can grow to around 2 metres or more, depending on light and pot size. At XXLplant you can buy it from 70 to 210 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot. To keep it compact, you can cut back the tips in spring.
Is the Pachira aquatica toxic to cats and dogs?
The Pachira aquatica is listed by the ASPCA as non-toxic to cats and dogs. That makes the money tree a safe choice for a home with pets. Still, it is best not to let them chew on it, as eating leaves is not good for any animal.
Where is the best place for a Pachira aquatica?
Give the Pachira a bright spot with indirect light, for example near a north, east or west-facing window. If it stands by a south-facing window, keep it at least 2 metres away, because direct sunlight scorches the leaves. A temperature between 18 and 24 °C is ideal, and no lower than 10 °C.
How often should you water a Pachira aquatica?
Only water when the top 2 to 5 cm of compost is dry. In summer that works out at roughly once a week, in winter once every 2 to 3 weeks. Never leave water standing in the bottom of the pot, because the thick trunk and roots rot quickly with wet feet.
Can you prune a Pachira aquatica?
Yes, the Pachira responds well to pruning. In spring, cut overly long branches back to just above a leaf; it will branch out again there and become fuller. A braided trunk simply stays intact; you only prune the crown.
Why is my Pachira aquatica getting yellow leaves after delivery?
After moving to a new spot, the Pachira has to adjust to different light and humidity. A few yellow or falling leaves in the first weeks are normal. Give it a fixed bright spot, do not overwater and remove the yellow leaves.
How is a large Pachira aquatica delivered?
The plant leaves us upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. In frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack, and the largest plants go with a specialist carrier, otherwise PostNL or DHL. It usually arrives within 4 to 5 working days.
