Pros and cons
According to our plant experts
+Pro: Hardy to around minus 15 degrees, so it can stay outdoors all year round.

Yes, the Trachycarpus fortunei, or Chinese windmill palm, is one of the hardiest palms and can cope with temperatures down to about minus 15 degrees. If it is in a pot, wrap the pot in severe winters, as roots freeze faster in a pot than in open ground. For young palms you can also protect the crown with horticultural fleece in hard frost.
How big does a Trachycarpus fortunei get?
The Trachycarpus grows steadily, but planted in open ground it can eventually reach several metres with a hairy trunk. At XXLplant you buy it from 85 to 270 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot. So with a large size you have a mature palm in your garden straight away.
Where should you put a Trachycarpus fortunei?
Put it in a sunny to partly shaded spot, preferably sheltered from strong wind, which can tear the leaves. Make sure the soil drains well, as waterlogged roots in winter do more damage than cold. It can go either in open ground or in a large pot on the patio.
How often should you water a Trachycarpus fortunei?
In summer, water generously every week, more often in hot weather and in a pot. Outdoors in winter it needs little or no extra water. Make sure excess water can drain away properly.
When should you prune a Trachycarpus fortunei?
Only prune the old, lower leaves that turn brown or yellow, preferably in spring or summer. Cut the leaf stalk off a few centimetres from the trunk; that is how the characteristic trunk develops. Never cut into the growing point at the top, as that is where the palm grows from.
Does the Trachycarpus fortunei flower?
Yes, a mature Trachycarpus fortunei flowers in late spring or early summer with large plumes of small yellow flowers. Young palms don't flower yet. There are male and female plants; only female plants can produce berries.
How is a large Trachycarpus fortunei delivered?
The plant leaves us upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. In frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack, and the largest plants go with a specialist carrier, otherwise PostNL or DHL. It usually arrives within 4 to 5 working days.
