All about
The Strelitzia dossier
Strelitzia nicolai
The Strelitzia nicolai comes from the coastal forests of South Africa, where it grows into a tree-like plant many meters high. Its large, banana-like leaves catch plenty of sun and wind. Cracks in the leaves are completely natural: this way the plant allows the wind to pass through without being blown over.
Indoors, the Strelitzia grows into an impressive houseplant with a tropical appearance. It is not known as the bird of paradise plant for nothing.

Placement and light
The Strelitzia is a real sun worshiper: the more light, the better. Place it in the brightest spot in the house, preferably directly in front of a large window facing south or west. Too little light inhibits growth and makes the petioles limp.
Turn the plant a quarter turn regularly for even growth. Keep the temperature above 12 degrees; In summer it can also be placed outside in a sheltered position.
Water and feeding
Keep the potting soil slightly moist during the growing season and water about once or twice a week in the summer. In winter the soil may become drier in between. Avoid a layer of water at the bottom of the pot, because the roots do not like that.
Provide plant food every two weeks from March to September. Wipe the large leaves occasionally with a damp cloth so that they catch more light.
Is something wrong with your Strelitzia?
Brown edges usually indicate dry air or a water shortage, yellow leaves indicate too much water. Cracks in the leaves are normal and part of the plant. If the leaf curls lengthwise, the plant is thirsty. In dry air, spider mites can appear, recognizable by fine spider silk under the leaves.
Repot a young Strelitzia every two years in the spring; older specimens can be kept in the same pot for longer. The strong roots can literally deform a plastic nursery pot. Choose a sturdy pot that is about twenty percent wider and use nutritious, well-drained potting soil. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.
Toxic to pets?
The Strelitzia is slightly poisonous to cats and dogs, especially the flowers and seeds. Chewing the plant can cause stomach complaints. Serious poisoning is rare, but it is best to keep the plant out of reach of nibbling pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.
The Strelitzia is one of the fastest growers among large houseplants: in good light it produces several large leaves per year, always from the heart of the plant. Our XXL ones are years old and immediately make a tropical statement in your home.
What is the difference between Strelitzia reginae and Strelitzia nicolai?
The Strelitzia reginae stays more compact and is the species with the well-known orange and blue bird of paradise flowers. The Strelitzia nicolai grows much larger, has white and blue flowers and rarely flowers indoors. If you want a bird of paradise that can flower indoors, the reginae is the logical choice.
How big does a Strelitzia reginae get?
A Strelitzia reginae in a pot usually grows to around 1 to 1.5 metres tall and mainly gets fuller over the years. XXLplant sells it from 100 to 180 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot. The largest size is a mature plant in a pot 50 cm across.
Where should you put a Strelitzia reginae?
A Strelitzia reginae needs plenty of light, ideally with at least four hours of direct sunlight a day. A spot in front of a south or west-facing window works well. In summer it can also stand outside in a sunny, sheltered spot.
How often should you water a Strelitzia reginae?
Water a Strelitzia reginae about once a week and let the top layer of compost dry out in between. Water less in winter. Make sure no water is left standing in the decorative pot.
Is a Strelitzia reginae toxic to cats and dogs?
The Strelitzia reginae is listed by the ASPCA as toxic to cats and dogs. The flowers and seeds in particular can cause nausea and stomach upset if eaten. It is best kept out of reach of pets.
Why are the leaves of my Strelitzia reginae curling?
Curling leaves on a Strelitzia reginae usually point to too little water or dry air. Check that the soil doesn't stay dry for too long and mist the leaves now and then. Split leaf edges are normal and not a sign of disease.
How is a Strelitzia reginae delivered?
XXLplant ships the Strelitzia reginae upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. The largest plants go with a specialised carrier, otherwise PostNL or DHL. In frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack.
