All about
The Schefflera dossier
Schefflera arboricola
The Schefflera comes from Taiwan and southern China, where it grows as a small tree. Its leaves stand like fingers on a hand, hence the nickname finger tree.
It is one of the most rewarding houseplants: fast growing, full and almost always happy.

Placement and light
The Schefflera does well in a light spot without bright afternoon sun, but also accepts partial shade. Variegated varieties need more light to maintain their markings.
Keep the temperature above 12 degrees and avoid drafts. In the summer it can be sheltered outside.
Water and feeding
Water as soon as the top centimeters of soil are dry: about once a week in summer, once every two weeks in winter. The Schefflera would rather be a little too dry than too wet.
Feed every two weeks from March to September. Wiping the leaves occasionally keeps them shiny.
Is something wrong with your Schefflera?
Leaf loss in Schefflera is usually a sign of too much water or a place that is too dark. Yellow leaves indicate wet feet, sticky leaves indicate scale insects; this is the most common pest on this plant. Bare growth means a lack of light: then prune it into shape.
Repot the Schefflera every two to three years in the spring in a pot that is one size larger. Standard potting soil is sufficient; make sure there is drainage. Large specimens appreciate a sturdy pot. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.
Toxic to pets?
The Schefflera contains calcium oxalate and is poisonous to cats and dogs. Chewing irritates the mouth and stomach. Place the plant out of reach of nibbling pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.
The Schefflera is a fast grower that can grow tens of centimeters per year with light and nutrition. Pruning is always allowed and will only make it fuller. Our XXL specimens have already been grown into full-fledged house trees.
A Schefflera arboricola can grow to 2 metres or more indoors, but takes pruning well to keep it compact. XXLplant sells it as a braided trunk 130 cm tall in a ø30 cm pot, measured including the nursery pot.
Where should you put a Schefflera?
A Schefflera likes a bright spot with indirect light or partial shade, for example by an east- or west-facing window. Avoid harsh sun on the leaves. Turn the plant now and then so it grows evenly.
How often should you water a Schefflera?
Water a Schefflera about once a week in summer and let the top layer of soil dry out slightly in between. In winter once every 1 to 2 weeks is usually enough. Avoid wet feet, because that causes root rot.
Is a Schefflera toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, a Schefflera is toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves contain oxalate crystals that irritate the mouth and stomach, causing drooling or vomiting. Keep it out of reach of pets that chew on plants.
Can you prune a Schefflera?
Yes, a Schefflera takes pruning well. In spring, cut overly long branches back to just above a leaf and it will branch out again from there. That keeps the crown full and compact.
How is a Schefflera delivered?
Your Schefflera travels upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. In frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack. It will usually be with you within 4 to 5 working days.
