All about
The Schefflera dossier
Schefflera arboricola
The Schefflera comes from Taiwan and southern China, where it grows as a small tree. Its leaves stand like fingers on a hand, hence the nickname finger tree.
It is one of the most rewarding houseplants: fast growing, full and almost always happy.

Placement and light
The Schefflera does well in a light spot without bright afternoon sun, but also accepts partial shade. Variegated varieties need more light to maintain their markings.
Keep the temperature above 12 degrees and avoid drafts. In the summer it can be sheltered outside.
Water and feeding
Water as soon as the top centimeters of soil are dry: about once a week in summer, once every two weeks in winter. The Schefflera would rather be a little too dry than too wet.
Feed every two weeks from March to September. Wiping the leaves occasionally keeps them shiny.
Is something wrong with your Schefflera?
Leaf loss in Schefflera is usually a sign of too much water or a place that is too dark. Yellow leaves indicate wet feet, sticky leaves indicate scale insects; this is the most common pest on this plant. Bare growth means a lack of light: then prune it into shape.
Repot the Schefflera every two to three years in the spring in a pot that is one size larger. Standard potting soil is sufficient; make sure there is drainage. Large specimens appreciate a sturdy pot. You can find the matching decorative pots directly on this page.
Toxic to pets?
The Schefflera contains calcium oxalate and is poisonous to cats and dogs. Chewing irritates the mouth and stomach. Place the plant out of reach of nibbling pets or choose an animal-friendly alternative.
The Schefflera is a fast grower that can grow tens of centimeters per year with light and nutrition. Pruning is always allowed and will only make it fuller. Our XXL specimens have already been grown into full-fledged house trees.
How big does a Schefflera arboricola Compacta grow?
The Schefflera arboricola can grow to 2 metres or more indoors; the Compacta stays fuller and denser than the standard variety. At XXLplant you buy it as a standard tree 180 to 190 cm tall, measured including the nursery pot. Pruning makes it easy to keep it at the size you want.
Is the Schefflera toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, the Schefflera is toxic to cats and dogs. The leaves contain calcium oxalate crystals that irritate the mouth when chewed and can cause drooling and vomiting. So place it where pets cannot reach it.
What is the difference between a standard Schefflera and a bush?
A standard Schefflera has a bare trunk with a round crown on top, like a small tree. A bush is full of leaves from the ground up. The XXLplant plants are tree forms on a trunk, which gives a clean, stately look in a large room.
Where should you put a Schefflera arboricola Compacta?
Choose a bright spot with indirect light to partial shade, for example by an east or west-facing window. Direct sun can scorch the leaves. It is happy at 16 to 24 °C and should not be kept colder than 12 °C.
How often should you water a Schefflera?
Keep the soil slightly moist and let the top layer dry out between waterings. In summer that works out at about once a week, in winter every 1 to 2 weeks. Avoid wet feet to prevent root rot.
Can you prune a Schefflera?
Yes, the Schefflera copes well with pruning. In spring, cut back any straggly branches to keep the crown nicely round and full. After pruning the plant will sprout again below the cut.
How is a large Schefflera delivered?
The plant leaves us upright in its own plant box, with the crown in a paper sleeve and the pot secured. In frost or heat we add a heat pack or cold pack, and the largest plants go with a specialist carrier, otherwise PostNL or DHL. It usually arrives within 4 to 5 working days.
